Wine with a sense of place

Our Philosophy

Many things have changed about Holman Ranch since 1928. But what hasn’t changed is our commitment to hospitality. People from around the world have been welcomed here, drawn to its unhurried ease and hints of possibility.

Today, we make wine that reflects this place as we reflect the wine: a bit of grace, elegance, and nuance. Not something that hits you over the head. We believe that good wine brings people together. But it’s meant to be savored. Nothing happens fast here. There’s a rhythm and pace that we trust, because wine is the ultimate host - to conversations, to moments, goodbyes.

It helps us mark time because wine itself is a marker of time. Eons of soil culminating in a single year’s harvest, only to keep aging in our French Oak barrels and bottles until that single moment. There’s beautiful variation in our terroir, allowing each wine experience to be different, like each memory.

We could be considered new wine from old California. But in reality, what happens here predates commercial wineries: People forming relationships in harmony with nature.

It’s our privilege to be stewards of this land in the corner of the Carmel Valley appellation. We hope to leave it better than we found it and, more importantly, inspire others to do the same.

 Our Values

Proudly Californian

Remembering a time when California wines weren’t taken as seriously, Holman Ranch is a champion for all West Coast wines, especially those in the Central Coast which are largely still overlooked. Wineries need our collective support now more than ever.

A hundred years of hospitality

Our gates at the historic hacienda represent generations of hospitality at Holman Ranch. Our mission is to carry out that shared vision with greater accessibility.

Respecting what’s Timeless

As farmers first, we practice good stewardship of this ecosystem. Whether by sourcing our power through solar energy or using sustainable water management, we are conscious of our impact on the environment and local community where we are rooted. This respect extends to the heritage sites on our property that have been meticulously preserved and carefully modernized.

Letting the wine speak

As wine has become a commodity, we want each bottle to remind us what can’t be commoditized: history and hospitality. They are the raw elements, our cultural terroir, that are bigger than ourselves.

As a boutique winery, we don’t try to be all things to all people. But we take pride in doing what we do well and letting the wine speak for itself. Our style of wine transports you to a specific place and time. From the first vintage in 2009, we have been committed to producing top-quality fruit, notably pinot noir and chardonnay, with the ideal structure and minerality for a pure expression of our microclimate.
